Why Generative AI Adoption Is a Journey
At Organizing4Innovation, we treat AI adoption as a behavior challenge, not a knowledge gap. Instead of another course, we built a four-week guided experience using Marisa Murgatroyd’s Experiencify platform.
The results for a group of busy attorneys?
- 67% active engagement.
- >50% completed every single task in the program.
Those are numbers unheard of in online learning, where participation and completion are around 3-5% are more common.
The reason is simple: participants weren’t learning about Copilot - they were using it, immediately, for tasks that mattered:
- drafting a memo,
- organizing notes,
- brainstorming client strategies,
- overcoming procrastination.
As Ethan Mollick has noted, “It takes a few evenings to get used to a new tool.” That’s all it took - four weeks of hands-on momentum - to move from awareness to comfort.
Why This Works: The Science of Small Wins
Behavioral science confirms it. BJ Fogg’s habit model shows that behavior sticks when three elements converge: motivation, ability, and a prompt.
Traditional training assumes motivation will carry people through. But in reality, motivation fluctuates; ability and prompt design determine whether habits form.
That’s what experiencified learning delivers - immediate feedback, small rewards, and visible progress. It transforms “training” into a journey where competence and confidence build together.
Once people see value, motivation becomes self-sustaining.
That’s when the adoption and transformation start.
GenAI Adoption Is a Journey - and Firms Keep Skipping the First Step
Generative AI adoption isn’t about mastering prompts or passing quizzes. It’s about repeated use in meaningful contexts.
Professionals must feel comfortable before they can become curious, and curious before they become creative. Yet most firms start with the final stage - expecting creativity before comfort. That’s why adoption plateaus after pilots.
When you design for habit, not hype, you build confidence before competence - and that changes everything.
Is Your Training Built for Learning or Habit?
Take five minutes this week to review your firm’s GenAI training materials.
Ask yourself:
- Does this program focus on tools or behavior?
- Tools = learning about features.
- Behavior = learning through use.
- How quickly does it lead participants to action?
- If your first “do this” moment happens after the second module, it’s too late.
- What’s celebrated?
- Completion of lessons, or completion of actions?
If your training checks more “learning” boxes than “doing” ones, it’s time to redesign.
The fastest way to move from hype to habit is to get people using GenAI, not just knowing it exists.
